A domain name is the address of your website. Computers use IP addresses: long strings of numbers that are hard to remember. Domain names are designed to be easy for us to remember.
These addresses are made up of two or three elements. When read from right to left, a top-level domain (TLD) is the letters at the end (such as .com ), also known as an extension. A second-level domain is the name of your website or company. A third-level domain — or subdomain — could be something like blog.example.com or www.example.com.
Your web address (second-level domain) can contain a combination of numbers, letters, and hyphens, but not any punctuation or other special characters. It ignores upper and lowercase letters, so you can use capital letters at the beginning of words in promotional materials to make them easier to read. They can be up to 63 characters long.

Scammers may try to copy your domain name, but with a different top-level domain. So consider whether it’s worth it to purchase popular alternative extensions. For example, if you purchased example.com, you might want to purchase example.net and so on.
If you’re looking for a website address for a new business, you might want to choose a top-level domain (TLD) that matches your geographic location — called a country code top-level domain (ccTLD). Like .uk, .us, .scot, .wales, or .it. Or even a more local one, like .london.
